Dear Friends,

October is the most spectacular month of the year here in Half Moon Bay! Not only is the weather gorgeous, but pumpkin patches show up almost before you can flip the calendar. I am reminded how much fun it is to be a child. My wish for you is that you will take time to play and enjoy the magical moments with your family.

Whatever your stage of motherhood, I hope you feel inspired and supported each month to live more fully and joyfully. My mission is to bring you simple and honest articles that address the challenges of motherhood and offer practical ideas that you can use right now to usher in more energy, time, and move beyond balance to vibrance.

Breathing: Simple Yet Profound

When my back went out a month ago, for the sixth time in 4 years, I realized I needed to do something to fix the problem, not just manage the pain. The Healing Yoga foundation came highly recommended by three friends, so I scheduled a private consultation. After quite a few questions about my lifestyle and spiritual beliefs, the therapist gave me a personalized program of poses complete with a meditation at the end. To my surprise, he also spent about half the session teaching me how to breathe. Having taken yoga off and on for years, I knew proper breathing was a vital component, but I was amazed to find out just how therapeutic it could be.

I left feeling hopeful but not sure I could commit to doing the program every day. I can be very disciplined about getting exercise, as long as it is sweaty, because the benefits seem so apparent. Now I was being asked simply to sit still and breathe. But desperation and pain are fantastic motivators.

After a few nights of practicing my program, the benefits went way beyond my back feeling better. There was a dramatic difference in the quality of my sleep. A week later, I found myself concentrating on breathing when faced with a decision. I could feel my body relax and clarity came easily. All my relationships benefited from me being more present and at ease. I could go on and on, but you get the picture -- it worked.

My life is cyclical, it’s not a straight line. Lessons come back around until I learn them on a deeper level. I have been practicing “being” versus “doing” for years now, but the act of consciously breathing is taking it to an entirely new level. I assumed that being stressed out was an unavoidable condition, part of being a working mom. I now fully realize it's optional. A simple but profound discovery.

Into Action

Practice the art of breathing!

First, imagine the color that stress is for you. For instance, for me it is best represented by red. Now, imagine the color that best represents peace. Peace, for me, is a golden warm light.

Now close your eyes and take a deep breath in imagining the color of peace filling your lungs and your body. When you exhale imagine the color of stress leaving all the parts of your body. Breathe in peace and breathe out stress! Do this three times.

At different points throughout the day when either feeling stressed or faced with an important decision, take a few minutes and try this exercise.
